  • Clever Culture Systems completes three sales of flagship APAS Independence automated culture plate reading system to global pharma manufacturers
  • EMVision progresses clinical programs for emu and First Responder brain scanners
  • Global revenue for Orthocell’s flagship nerve repair product Remplir increased 20%, contributing more than 40% of total revenue

Special Report: Clever Culture Systems, EMvision Medical Devices, Orthocell and EZZ Life Science post their September 2026 quarterly results.

ASX healthcare stocks demonstrated progress across the board in their latest quarterly results, including commercial progress and trial milestones.

That’s not to say there weren’t obstacles to overcome during Q1 FY27, with stocks showing resilience to global economic headwinds as they look to grow their markets.

Clever Culture Systems (ASX:CC5)

  • Three APAS Independence sales completed, with two sold to Novo Nordisk in Europe and one to AstraZeneca in the US
  • Post-quarter, PSC Biotech appointed sales agent for North America and Singapore to support company’s growth plans
  • Clever Culture developing new benchtop system APAS Revolution supported by $2.6 million funding package

CC5 made a positive start to FY27, completing three sales of its flagship APAS Independence automated culture plate reading system to global pharmaceutical manufacturers during the quarter.

The sales comprised two instruments for Novo Nordisk in Europe and one for AstraZeneca in the US.

APAS Independence is the only technology cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for automated culture plate reading, and is marketed to pharmaceutical manufacturers for environmental monitoring.

The Novo Nordisk contract also includes development of an advanced integration solution connecting APAS with the company’s global Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), an important step towards potential deployment across additional manufacturing sites.

CC5 said the principal elements of the connectivity had been successfully completed, substantially reducing technical risk, with further development expected to be largely finished in early 2027.

CC5 is pursuing a ‘land and expand’ strategy, initially securing evaluations with pharmaceutical manufacturers before seeking broader deployment across their global operations.

The company estimates its existing pipeline represents around 100 potential future instrument sales. Three customers are expected to complete evaluations during H1 FY27, with CC5 saying successful evaluations could progress to technology rollouts.

It also expects to start a paid evaluation with a new Top-20 global pharmaceutical company, with a contract targeted for Q2 FY27.

CC5 expects sales and evaluations to reach eight units in the first half of FY27, matching the total number sold during FY26, and setting the foundation for a potential step change for the full-year FY27 sales outlook.

Post quarter CC5 also expanded its sales reach through the appointment of PSC Biotech as its sole sales agent for the pharmaceutical manufacturing market in the US, Canada and Singapore.

Under the agreement, PSC Biotech will identify and qualify sales opportunities for CC5, which will retain responsibility for closing sales and ongoing software and service fees.

CC5 is also in final procurement discussions with two existing global pharmaceutical customers following their APAS evaluations, with purchase orders expected during the current quarter.

It is also finalising a purchase commitment from a new single-site pharmaceutical manufacturer, with installation and qualification planned before the end of CY26.

CC5 this week also announced it was expanding its product portfolio, developing a new benchtop system dubbed APAS Revolution to bring automated environmental monitoring to smaller pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities.

The company has secured a $2.6m funding package, comprising a $1m placement and $1.6m unsecured loan to accelerate development.

EMvision Medical Devices (ASX:EMV)

  • EMVision progresses clinical programs, including a pivotal trial for its bedside emu brain scanner
  • Company progressed plans to add acute ischaemic stroke detection to emu, alongside its existing haemorrhagic stroke detection capability
  • Stage 1 of Mobile Stroke Unit Study with Ambulance Victoria and The Royal Melbourne Hospital for First Responder meets primary usability and workflow objectives

EMV made progress on clinical programs for its bedside emu brain scanner and First Responder pre-hospital brain scanner during Q1 FY27.

Recruitment in the multi-centre, prospective, blinded emu pivotal trial surpassed 230 patients by early October, with the majority recruited contributing to the 300-participant primary analysis cohort.

The trial underpins the planned FDA De Novo submission for EMV’s first commercial product, with a primary objective of demonstrating intracranial haemorrhage detection sensitivity and specificity above 80%.

EMV also progressed plans to add acute ischaemic stroke detection to emu, defining the feature’s intended use and required performance thresholds.

The capability is expected to be validated within the existing pivotal trial using ischaemic stroke data already being collected, with a modest incremental increase in sample size anticipated

EMV plans to discuss the trial amendment with the FDA through an upcoming pre-submission process, with the additional capability potentially included in emu’s first FDA-cleared release.

Meanwhile, a Continuous Innovation Study continued to build the proprietary dataset underpinning algorithm development, with more than 190 patients recruited.

EMVision further advanced its First Responder program, with Stage 1 of the Mobile Stroke Unit Study with Ambulance Victoria and The Royal Melbourne Hospital meeting primary usability and workflow objectives.

Combined with an earlier Royal Flying Doctor Service aeromedical study, the results support the prototype’s usability across demanding road and air pre-hospital environments.

Production-equivalent units featuring a lower component count, simplified assembly and materially reduced weight are on track for completion in H1 CY27, supporting the device’s planned path to market.

The company also signed an MoU with the Australian Stroke Alliance (ASA) to jointly pursue non-dilutive research and translational funding for pre-hospital stroke diagnosis.

The CRC-P grant-funded emu Regional Benefits Study, in partnership with the ASA, Titan Pre-Hospital Innovation and South Australia’s Rural Support Service, progressed in the quarter with site visits undertaken at preferred investigational sites in rural and remote South Australia.

EMV’s technology was presented at major stroke and medical research conferences during, including at the Australia and New Zealand Stroke Organisation Conference (ANZSOC) in Brisbane in August.

The company ended Q1 FY27 with cash reserves of $18.1m, up from $17.1m on June 30, alongside $3.7m remaining in non-dilutive grant funding.

Orthocell (ASX:OCC)

  • Remplir global revenue increased 20% quarter-on-quarter, with US unit sales up 25% to 149, contributing more than 40% of total revenue
  • First commercial sales achieved in Thailand, while UK and European regulatory approval remains on track for the end of CY26
  • Strong cash position of $39m supports continued US commercialisation, international expansion and R&D

Regenerative medicine company OCC delivered continued growth for its flagship nerve repair product Remplir during Q1 FY27, with increasing US sales, broader hospital adoption and expansion into new international markets.

Revenue totalled $3.6m, up 19% on pcp, maintaining a compound quarterly growth rate of 8% over the past nine quarters. While total revenue was down 7% on the June quarter, global Remplir revenue increased 20% quarter-on-quarter, with the product now accounting for more than 40% of total revenue.

US Remplir unit sales increased 25% to 149 during the quarter, up from 119 in the previous three months. US hospital adoption also continued to accelerate, with 79 hospitals now purchasing Remplir, up 13% during the quarter, and 93 surgeons using the product, a 22% increase.

Distributor coverage now extends across ~70% of the US population, while Value Analysis Committee approvals increased 25% to 55 during the quarter, with a further 59 applications progressing.

OCC also secured its first US national contract and approvals in two of the country’s four largest states, positioning it for further growth.

The company continued to expand Remplir’s international footprint, recording its first commercial sales in Thailand’s estimated US$84m nerve repair market.

Meanwhile, regulatory approval for entry into the UK and European Union markets remains on track for the end of CY26, with market access preparations continuing alongside distributor LEDA Orthopaedics and key opinion leaders.

In Australia, Remplir has been used in more than 300 prostatectomy procedures, with early results from five patients undergoing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy for advanced prostate cancer showing encouraging functional recovery.

All five procedures were completed without reported device-related complications, while 80% of patients demonstrated encouraging urinary continence outcomes and 75% of those with pre-operative erectile function reported a return of function. The findings will inform a planned prospective clinical trial.

OCC also expanded its medical education program in the US with 15 events completed during the quarter designed to build surgeon awareness of Remplir’s nerve repair capabilities and the clinical evidence supporting its use.

The company finished Q1 FY27 with $39m in cash to support commercial execution, capital investment along with R&D.

EZZ Life Science (ASX:EZZ)

  • EAORON skincare sales up 141.2% year-on-year, supported by continued marketing investment and promotional activity, including Chemist Warehouse campaign
  • Australian and New Zealand pharmacy distribution footprint maintained, with EZZ continuing to develop presence across close to 100 pharmacy locations
  • Cash balance of $9.16m at September 30, with the company remaining debt-free, excluding lease liabilities

EZZ is continuing to diversify its sales channels and strengthen its pharmacy and international distribution networks as softer trading across Chinese e-commerce platforms weighs on revenue.

Customer receipts fell ~37.7% on pcp to $7.15m in the September quarter, reflecting challenging market conditions, increased competition and weaker-than-expected consumer demand in China.

EZZ continues to manage its exposure to these channels while developing alternative distribution opportunities across domestic pharmacy, retail and international markets.

The company reported a 141.2% year-on-year increase in sales of its EAORON skincare range, supported by targeted marketing and promotional activity, including a Chemist Warehouse campaign.

EZZ reported a net operating cash outflow of $350,000, compared with outflows exceeding $3m for the pcp, supported by disciplined working capital management and cost control.

The company maintained its presence across close to 100 physical pharmacy locations, including Direct Chemist Outlet, Priceline and other pharmacy partners.

EZZ said the expansion of physical pharmacy distribution remained an important component of its strategy to diversify its sales channels and reduce reliance on individual e-commerce platforms and markets.

The company participated in the Pharmacy Connect 2026 event held in Sydney, engaging with pharmacy partners and industry stakeholders to reinforce its domestic omnichannel presence.

It also supported a GP community event hosted by 4Cyte Pathology at the Chinese Garden of Friendship, alongside the Australasian Medical Services Coalition (AMSC).

During the quarter EZZ also continued to develop its international distribution relationships and strengthen brand engagement across priority markets.

Two distributors owed EZZ a total of $3.86m at the end of Q1 FY27, citing tighter Chinese government regulations, policy changes and weaker economic conditions in Asia that had affected product sales.

It is negotiating debt recovery, payment plans and possible stock returns, but said the outcome remained uncertain. In its FY26 annual report EZZ flagged the China market as a risk and holds a $2.40m allowance for potential credit losses.

EZZ finished the quarter with $9.16m in cash and cash equivalents and remained debt-free, excluding lease liabilities.

The company expects operating cash outflows to begin stabilising from around March 2027, following the conclusion of its Australian Open advertising commitment at the end of January, subject to trading conditions and expenditure requirements.
