Steel companies have opportunities throughout the agricultural equipment chain and this means supplying the right steel

For decades, tractors have been an important factor in agricultural mechanisation. However, the evolving needs of modern agriculture are extending demand beyond tractors to a wider range of implements, attachments, and specialised farm machinery. From rotavators, cultivators, and seed drills to harvesters, trailers, and crop-processing equipment, these machines are becoming increasingly important in supporting efficient and timely farm operations.

Every machine and attachment relies on steel for components ranging from structural frames and chassis to blades, discs, shafts, and other critical parts. As demand for agricultural machinery evolves, opportunities are emerging across the steel value chain from steel production and processing to component manufacturing and fabrication. For steel companies, the opportunity lies not merely in supplying more material, but in delivering application-specific solutions that meet the industry’s requirements for strength, durability, and cost efficiency.

The expanding agricultural machinery landscape

In agriculture, there is a need for implements at all levels, from soil preparation up to planting, harvesting, transportation, and post-harvest processing. Rotavators, ploughs, disc harrows, cultivators, and seed drills do work at the field level, while transportation and crop-processing demands are met through trailers, threshers, and harvesters.

India’s focus on agricultural mechanisation is proving beneficial. As per a Government bulletin issued in July 2026, under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation, 21.61 lakh agricultural machines were distributed, and 27,554 Custom Hiring Centres were established between 2014–15 and 2025–26. These steps will enhance accessibility of machines through individual ownership as well as shared hiring centres. Though the numbers do not indicate overall market demand, statistics do show the level of public enthusiasm for mechanisation and the potential it has to boost accessibility of agricultural equipment.

The steel behind agricultural mechanisation

Steel is essential to the strength, durability, and performance of agricultural machines. Some of the machine parts that require suitable steel material include the frame, chassis, hopper, shaft, axle, brackets, and mounting, among others. On the other hand, the blades, discs, and tines are examples of the soil-engaging parts that require suitable hardness and abrasion resistance.

These applications create demand for flat steel, plates, structural shapes, tubing, and the right alloy steel. Due to the diverse needs of each part, the manufacturer requires material that will provide the right balance between strength, processability, and efficiency. Quality and proper processing can also be used to improve the reliability of a product and minimize wastage in production.

Unlocking opportunities across the steel value chain

Expansion in the farm machinery ecosystem presents new opportunities other than supplying steel to machinery makers. This can be done through offering a steady stream of steel with grades that are appropriate for their machinery. Steel distributors can do so by offering cut-to-length, slitting, profiling, and fabricatable steel products.

Manufacturers and fabricators of components can make blades, discs, shafts, frames, and other parts out of steel. The aftermarket also offers recurring opportunities through replacement parts and repair components as machinery experiences wear during regular use.

There is an opportunity for steel firms to venture beyond selling their products based on prices into offering added value, application-oriented products, and working more closely with OEMs. Regional processors and distributors will also be in a position to help small manufacturers by offering services such as varied order sizes, proximity of stock to the manufacturer, and timely delivery.

From steel supply to value-added solutions

Prospects would be shaped by machinery affordability, availability via Custom Hiring Centers, manufacturing capability at home, and the use of equipment suitable for various crop requirements. Manufacturing for exports might also provide some further opportunities, although issues such as seasonality, price sensitivity, and dispersed customers continue to represent challenges.

However, mechanisation in agriculture offers an opening for the steel industry that goes beyond the manufacture of tractors. Through knowledge of the material needs for each piece of equipment, through value addition, and through closer cooperation with equipment makers, steel companies have opportunities throughout the agricultural equipment chain. This does not mean simply supplying more tons of steel, but rather supplying the right steel.
