Tencent Q2 Shows AI Gains Emerging in Advertising and Cloud as Spending Surges

Gogetop Marketing analysis finds that some of Tencent’s clearest commercial gains from artificial intelligence are emerging inside established businesses, while newer AI products remain investment-heavy.

London, United Kingdom, November 07, 2026 --(PR.com)-- Tencent’s second-quarter results show artificial intelligence increasingly contributing to growth in advertising and cloud services, while the Chinese technology group continues to spend heavily on computing infrastructure and newer AI products.

Tencent reported revenue of 204.8 billion yuan (approximately US$30.5 billion), up 11% year over year, in results released Aug. 12.

Marketing Services revenue increased substantially faster, rising 22% to 43.6 billion yuan (approximately US$6.5 billion). Tencent attributed the growth partly to improvements in its AI-driven advertising recommendation model, upgrades to its AIM+ automated campaign-management system and stronger marketing capabilities within the Weixin ecosystem.

The results suggest that some of Tencent’s clearest commercial gains from AI are emerging not from standalone consumer chatbots, but from technology embedded within businesses that already have users, advertisers and established revenue models.

Tencent also said cloud revenue growth accelerated into the low-20% range year over year, supported by AI-related demand, international expansion and increased use of general cloud services. AI-related revenue included GPU rental and model-as-a-service offerings.

“AI is increasingly becoming part of the infrastructure behind digital business rather than simply a standalone product,” said Ms Emma Chen, China Social Media Manager at Gogetop Marketing. “Advertising and cloud services provide a clearer route to commercial value because the underlying customer relationships and revenue models already exist.”

The expansion is costly. Tencent’s capital expenditure reached 52.8 billion yuan (approximately US$7.9 billion) during the quarter, an increase of 176% year over year, as the company expanded investment in computing capacity.

Tencent has also begun showing investors more clearly how its newer AI initiatives affect profitability. Non-IFRS operating profit was 75.6 billion yuan (approximately US$11.2 billion), up 9%. Excluding newer AI products including Hy, Yuanbao, CodeBuddy, WorkBuddy and Xiaowei, operating profit would have been 86.1 billion yuan (approximately US$12.8 billion), up 19%.

The comparison does not represent a separately reported loss for those products, but indicates that Tencent’s newer AI businesses remain investment-heavy.

The wider Chinese market is expanding rapidly around that investment.

The China Internet Network Information Center reported that China had 602 million generative AI users by the end of 2025, up 141.7% from a year earlier, with generative AI reaching 42.8% of the country’s internet population.

QuestMobile separately estimated that China’s internet advertising market reached 385.34 billion yuan (approximately US$57.3 billion) in the first half of 2026, up 7.1%. Its Aug. 18 report also identified AI question-and-answer services as an emerging alternative to traditional search engines and noted that AI services were becoming more closely connected with e-commerce during China’s 618 shopping period.

For international brands, the change adds another layer to China’s already fragmented digital discovery environment, where consumers can encounter companies through Weixin, RedNote (Xiaohongshu), search engines, recommendation feeds, AI assistants and e-commerce platforms.

“The practical implication for brands is that information quality matters more as algorithms take a greater role in discovery,” Chen said. “Businesses need accurate, credible and locally relevant information wherever customers are searching and making decisions.”

Tencent’s quarter does not show that every AI investment is already generating a return. Its sharp increase in capital expenditure demonstrates the scale of the build-out still under way.

What the results do show is an emerging path to AI monetisation through existing businesses.

Rather than relying solely on consumers paying directly for AI applications, Tencent is increasingly using AI to improve advertising, cloud services and other established operations. That may prove to be one of the more significant developments in the next stage of China’s AI market.
